DDC Incontra Paul McNeil

System Process Form

Drawing on a diverse range of projects from his half-century as a graphic design practitioner, teacher and writer, Paul McNeil’s talk will focus on the primacy of form-giving to the role of the designer.

A number of typographic projects, driven by deliberation, chance and systematic procedures, will be presented to illustrate how expansive design spaces can be discovered and populated, liberating the designer from the heavy burden of trying to invent ‘new’ things while also opening up undiscovered and unpredictable territories.

Paul McNeil is a graphic designer, educator and writer. In 2009, he co-founded MuirMcNeil with Hamish Muir, a London-based practice focussed on exploring systematic methods in design for visual communication.

The Visual History of Type, McNeil’s definitive survey of typefaces from 1450–2015, was published in 2017, and Letters from M/M (Paris), his monograph on the renowned French studio’s type and letterforms, in 2022.

Introduced by Alessandro Colizzi, professor of Typographic Design and History of Design and Architecture
