"Abstract:

One day, a sultan wanted to decorate his palace hall in a particularly beautiful way. He had two teams of painters from as far away as Byzantium and China. Each of these teams had to paint frescos on one of the two long parallel walls of the hall. But without knowing what the other would paint. And like that, without allowing them to communicate, he gave each one a wall; in the middle of the room, an appropriately placed curtain prevented any communication between the painters on either side. When the work was completed, the Sultan was the first one who inspected the fresco painted by the Chinese. It was indeed wonderfully beautiful, "nothing could be more beautiful than this," said the Sultan, and with that conviction in his mind he pulled back the curtain to reveal the wall painted by the Greeks of Byzantium. But nothing had been painted on that wall by the Greeks, they had only cleaned and polished and polished it until it became a mirror of mysterious white that reflected, as if in a purer medium, the forms of the Chinese wall; and the shapes, the colors reached an unimaginable beauty that no longer seemed to be of this world."
