The digital course, taking place from January 7th to March 5th 2021, focuses on the field of Fashion-Tech aiming to advance students’ knowledge on how digitalization and virtualization of the design process affect the entire value chain management, including concept development and prototyping, production, supply chain operations and business model innovation, for faster, smarter, more efficient and sustainable garments.
The course aims to understand the digital twin toward 3D applications in fashion that has transformed radically the manual and often handcraftsmanship-based methodology of pattern construction, mock-up, prototyping, distributing, showcasing and selling processes within a digital/virtual formula: new virtual fashion experiences are created such as virtual showrooms, digital influencer and digital shows. Furthermore, the process of designing digital garments has become more complex and engineered, including materials, geometry, manufacturing processes specifications that can be carefully defined beforehand, thus facilitating innovation. More than solely design, this transformation has impacted the whole product development process by cutting costs, decreasing the time-to-market for the development of the collection, increasing the sustainability of the whole fashion value chain, and also impacting the organization and the business model of companies.
The course focuses in particular on developing the knowledge and understanding of new ways to design a fashion product that integrates and interfaces with digital technologies through lectures about theory and application examples, software, and preparatory applicative exercises about the following topics: 2D digital pattern, 3D modelling, prototyping, fabrics digitalization (including eco-sustainable materials), rendering, fitting simulation and visualization, along with tackling issues related to innovative business models and project management.
Contents will be delivered through a preliminary theoretical asynchronous part aimed to level the knowledge of the students as a prerequisite for the practical challenge-based part of the course. In the challenge-based part students will work in the interdisciplinary international groups to experience the process and the methodological approach of a project development activity that includes design, product life management, costing and pricing, research and materials management.
50 students will be selected from Politecnico di Milano - School of Design (Italy), Hogskolan i Boras - Swedish School of Textiles (Sweden), University of the Arts London – London College of Fashion (UK), TU/Delft - Industrial Design Engineering Faculty (The Netherlands), École Supérieure des Technologies Industrielles Avancées – Graduate School of Advanced Industrial Technologies (France).
The course is open to first and second years students enrolled in the MA Design for the Fashion System. Candidates can send their application via email to email@example.com, indicating the title of the course (‘Fashion Tech Interline’) in the subject of the email and attaching their curriculum vitae and project portfolio (maximum 10 MB) both in pdf format.
The selection criteria are intended to favour more mature and more team-oriented students with high problem-solving skills and advanced knowledge of the English language that can be deduced from the CV and the project portfolio.
Prerequisites: Knowledge of design methodology; problem-solving skills, critical thinking and creativity; ability to work in interdisciplinary and multicultural teams, having developed interpersonal and communication skills in previous design and/or work experiences; basic knowledge of pattern making techniques; computer skills related to the use of a 2D digital drawing software of its choice; computer skills related to the use of a 3D modeling software; computer skills related to the use of software to generate raster and vector images of its choice; knowledge of the English language (candidates with a B2 level in the QCER scale will be preferred).
