VIDEO: LET'S GO INTERNSHIP!

General informations

The internship / traineeship, henceforth 'internship', allows you to verify and complete the theory and methods learned during the course of study through a concrete approach to the job market and professionals.

There are three types of internships:

• Curricular compulsory internship: this is the internship foreseen by the degree program of students enrolled in the Master's Degrees.

• Curricular non compulsory internship: May be held by:
- Students who aim at developing a Master Thesis through an internship;
- A student who simply wants to do a training on the job experience.

The curricular non compulsory internship does not appear in the study plan and does not involve the recognition of CFUs. However, the activity must include contents related to the course of study. Students must activate the compulsory internship to complete the study plan and may additionally activate one (or more) non compulsory ones. However, this internship must be completed before the thesis is discussed.

• Extracurricular internship: it is any internship undertaken by a graduate non-enrolled in another course of study and can start up to 12 months after the title is obtained, with a maximum duration of 6 months for each experience. It does not confer CFUs. Extracurricular internship is managed by the Career Service. For more information: http://cm.careerservice.polimi.it/en/graduates/

A student who has been employed with a job contract (not an internship) at a company with a duration of at least six months and a professional profile related to his / her study course, can get the recognition of the experience as "Activity comparable to internship" (see paragraph HOW TO ACTIVATE AN INTERNSHIP for details) instead of  the curricular compulsory internship, provided it is approved  by the Internship Academic Supervisor for the Course of Studies (see below, paragraph CONTACTS AND STAFF).

How to search for an internship

You can find an internship in the following ways:

• applying for the offers on the Career Service board by using the flags “internship/student / graduate / your subject area". In the thirty days following the application, you may be contacted directly by the company for an interview if your profile is suitable

• identifying a company through personal contacts/search or through a Professor

• contacting a Professor of the School who is available to host you in his/her Laboratory for the internship

For more information: "How to find an internship that suits you"

TIPS ON APPLICATIONS FOR INTERNSHIPS ABROAD: If you wish to apply for an internship abroad, we suggest you to make your curriculum and book available online, by creating a mini site or by using a "file-sharing" service. It is better to start searching 3-4 months before the period scheduled for your internship because:

- finding an internship abroad could take more time

- it may be necessary to produce special documentation (visa ...)

You are required to check the legal requirements valid in the hosting country, according to your nationality. In case additional documentation to support visa applications is needed, it has to be requested to CareerService/SATs at least 15 days before the start.

- often, foreign companies plan their internships well in advance.

In the case of internships in Europe, you can take part in the annual Erasmus + for Traineeship competition call, managed by the Career Service

Yes, Politecnico di Milano provides you with an insurance covering you in terms of accidents and civil liability, in days, premises and hours declared within the document itself; for this reason it is necessary that the internship is activated by delivering to the Internship Office the contract signed by the parties before the beginning of the internship.

What is the duration of an internship?

Curricular compulsory internships last 250 hours (300 for PSSD students who want to validate also the workshop).

No. The internship must be done in a working environment. You must have your own workstation, with Company computer and a supervisor available for help.
